Chiropractic To Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

One of the most little known natural remedies for high blood pressure is a chiropractic technique. Yes, a trip to a knowledgeable chiropractor could be what's needed for you to lower blood pressure naturally.

Why is that?

A placebo controlled study that received national media attention (see Web MD) showed that adjustments to the C-1 vertebra - called the "Atlas" vertebra - can lower high blood pressure naturally for some patients.

Here's what the researchers noted about the benefit of this adjustment:

“This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination,” study leader George Bakris, MD, tells WebMD. “And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems,” adds Bakris, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center.

Eight weeks after undergoing the procedure, 25 patients with early-stage high blood pressure had significantly lower blood pressure than 25 similar patients who underwent a sham chiropractic adjustment. Because patients can’t feel the technique, they were unable to tell which group they were in.

X-rays showed that the procedure realigned the Atlas vertebra — the doughnut-like bone at the very top of the spine — with the spine in the treated patients, but not in the sham-treated patients.

Compared to the sham-treated patients, those who got the real procedure saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

None of the patients took blood pressure medicine during the eight-week study.

This adjustment will not cure high blood pressure for every patient. It was effective for patients in this study whose C-1 vertebra required an adjustment and for whom, it turned out, had high blood pressure as a result of an alignment issue at the C-1 Vertebra or "Atlas".

There is a very practical question about the availability of this technique to the average person. The studies were done based on techniques advocated by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. The implication of the Web MD article is that the proper techniques are only available through chiropractors associated with that group.

According to the NUCCA, the difference between their approach and others can be described in this way:

The majority of practitioners attempt to influence the spine in areas of segmental or local fixations to increase mobility and hope for improved structural stability. NUCCA, (as well as a few other chiropractic techniques), approach the spine with the ability to improve structural and sustained postural balance that leads to improved spinal stability along with balanced mobility. The benefit of NUCCA care is that long term spinal balance is maintained and that produces improved overall health and well-being. All spinal practitioners agree that spinal care is important. The approaches vary from localized segmental care of many providers to the NUCCA practitioners that offer upper cervical care that affects the whole body balance and the long term spinal stability.

The NUCCA website has a database of their physicians. There may be one close by or not. Most chiropractors are familiar with this research (many got inundated with calls after the video below aired on TV!) and so it may be possible for your local chiropractor to address the issue if you specifically inquire when scheduling an appointment.

If the local chiropractor does not achieve these results, at that point you may wish to do the necessary travel to an NUCCA chiropractor. On the other hand, it may mean that the type of high blood press you have in not one that you can lower naturally and there may be no natural cures for high blood pressure available to you through chiropractic.
